It is not too much to say that photography(refers to both stills and cine) is an art of light. And subdued light and hard light, the both important lights in this art are created by shelf light. Let’s deep into the world of lighting in photography.

What’s hard light?

The nature and form of light can be divided into two types, that is, hard light (also named direct light) and soft light. Hard light refers to intense direct light. Under the illumination of hard light, there are light surface, backlight surface and shadow on the subject, which is the effective effect of forming the three-dimensional form of the subject.

What’s soft light, also named subdued or scattering light?

Soft light refers to not dazzling light which has not apparent shadow, aiming at reflecting an object and colour. It can soften the flash light to make the photos look more natural.

How do we use a flash or a steady light to create a scattering light source? The experienced people with the studio shooting will certainly say that use all kinds of soft light box! It softens the shelf light (or other light) to make the photo look more natural. It is a device installed outside the flash to soften the strong light.

In nature, most of what we see is lit by scattered light sources, such as overcast days, masked lights, multi-fluorescent environments, and scenes of light reflecting off walls and ceilings. The exception is hard light sources in the real world: direct sunny sunlight, spotlights, headlights, projectors, bare bulbs, etc.

For photographic lighting, most of us will choose soft light, right? Because they're natural (if you can shoot them with natural light, that's great), hard light is deliberate.

LED shelf lights are a convenient and energy efficient soft light source (light distribution technology allows LED point light source to expand into a surface light source, increasing the luminous surface), and it is a good choice when your budget is low.

The difference between hard and soft light

Problems with soft light

First, soft light waste energy. Soft (diffuse) light sources must originate from a large surface area, such as through a soft mask or reflected from a white/silver reflector. Not only does this mean a huge amount of light is wasted, but the source itself requires a huge amount of energy, while hard light comes from point sources, which are usually focused on a single point and have a strong directionality, which means smaller and more efficient. Soft light is also hard to control because it can sometimes come out flat. Ideally, we want the light to be soft but uneven: there is contrast, we want black shadows and soft surround.

Benefits of hard light

Has hard light no use at all? But in some ways, hard light is magical: It highlights color and texture; Not only is the lighting efficient, but the light can be moved away from your lens and your foreground and background light will create a similar lighting effect. If this operation is performed with soft light, the lighting efficiency will be significantly reduced, resulting in a significant light transition effect.
