Ancient lights have experienced a significant change from its wick to holder. Straw was originally used to ignite and then cotton thread while the oil used in oil lamps was changed from animal oil to vegetable oil, which was eventually replaced by kerosene. But what we are going to talk about is the development of Chinese lamp holder.
“Tao deng” is the earliest light found in ancient China around 3000 years ago. How old it is! This old light fixture was made of china clay with a dumbbell like shape. The followings are bronze lights, porcelain lights and iron lights. If you are interested the history of Chinese lights, please go on.
In primitive society
People learned to retain fire from nature so as to obtain warmth and light, but at that time there were no lamps and lanterns to preserve fire. What they could find is only clay pots to preserve fire but the deadly shortage is too short retention time.
When did lamps and lanterns appear? According to records, in the Western Zhou Dynasty(1046-771BC), there appeared a kind of bowl with a protrusion raised from bottom for holding a wick. It was one of the lighting tools at that time, and it was the earliest lamp we can see.
During Qin and han dynasties(221BC-221AD)
Economy and culture reached a highly development, triggering the development of ceramic industry. Most ordinary people could afford ceramic lamps, but the developing of bronze lights is not sluggish because they grabbed another market share in a more elegant style, being active in the upper society and ritual activities, like the famous “changxin” palace lantern is the representative work of the Han dynasty bronze lamp.
In the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties(221-589AD)
Lamps and lanterns gradually diversified, and more lamps and lanterns with figures, animals and other shapes appeared, but bronze lamps and lanterns in the upper society and sacrificial activities still unshakable position. And, at this time, porcelain lamps began to appear.
In the Sui and Tang Dynasties(589-907AD)
The highly developed porcelain industry further promoted the development of porcelain lamps. The most representative lamps in this period are the three-color lion lotus lamp and white porcelain panlong lamp, which showed the elegant cultural style of the Tang Dynasty. Then in the Song and Yuan dynasties, lamps and lanterns were not only more diversified in style, but also divided into daily lamps and funerary lamps, and lamps and lanterns were decorated in a variety of ways.
In the Ming and Qing dynasties(1368-1912AD)
The development of lamps and lanterns reached its peak, not only in the style of a major breakthrough, but also the material of lamps and lanterns is no longer limited to bronze, ceramics, but more abundant enamel, glaze, jade and metal, etc., opening a new world of lamps and lanterns.
However, there are still so much restricted aspects of the old light fixture for example it is hard to light the whole room up though people try to hang the fire under the ceiling with a cover which we call lantern. But it is not bright enough.
A great invention was created in the west world. The British scientist David invented the arc lamp in 1808, open a new era of electric lighting. With the introduce of electric lights, people can easily install their light tube on the ceiling or the wall to light the room up. Ceiling light with a liner light tube is equal to our old lantern, but more bright and safety as well as convenient.
Besides that, lights are no longer limited to illuminate. They also become an important decoration for the home with various display lights and shelf lights emerging. And lights indeed add warmth and beauty for the house.
